GIMP tutorial – combine two textures using layer masking

By , last updated July 3, 2017

Hi everyone hope you are having a great day!

Today I am going to show you a simple tutorial in GIMP on how to combine two similar backgrounds via layer masking.

I have used these two similar pictures from sftextures.com:

bright-green-artificial-grass-football-play-ground-soft-plastic-cover-large-texture-1024x682 green-nature-plant-standalone-on-grass-and-dead-dry-leaves-with-long-leaf-one-in-the-center-huge-texture-1024x682

Since both of these textures have grass in them they are ideal to be combined. The steps are as follows:

  1. Open gimp and open the left picture as a layer pressing ctrl + alt + O.
  2. Open the right picture as a layer using ctrl + alt + O and place it above the bush layer.
  3. Got To Layers>Mask>Add Layer mask.Snap 2014-12-03 at 21.55.01
  4. Choose white full transparency.Snap 2014-12-03 at 21.55.26
  5. Now choose the blend or gradient tool by pressing L.
  6. Choose radial option in the blend tool options change offset to 75 and drag the mouse from the centre of the page to the bottom right diagonally like a slash (like this \).Snap 2014-12-03 at 21.56.11Snap 2014-12-03 at 21.56.43
  7. Do you see the bush clearly? Well the layer mask has shown you the layer bush below. But wait the grass all round the bush is dry and faded and needs to be removed.
  8. So choose the eraser tool by pressing shift + E , choose a brush type with softened & blurred edges and erase all the unwanted dry grass around the bush. This requires patience and careful erasing.Snap 2014-12-03 at 21.58.12
  9. The brush size too big for you? Simply increase or decrease the size by pressing { or } bracket keys to decrease or increase the brush size respectively.
  10. Ta da you have successfully blended two textures using just a layer mask and the eraser tool.

Your Final image should like this:

It took me a few tries to get it right so don’t expect to get it correctly in one stroke. Undo it by pressing Ctrl + Z and keep trying the last step till you are satisfied and save your work.
